Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials voiced anger after the ex-president alleged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and asserted they should be arrested and penalized "with execution" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Recording That Triggered the Dispute
The recorded message, published on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who in the past acted in defense or intelligence roles.
"As we did, you all took an pledge to safeguard and defend this national charter," the officials affirmed in the short video. "Currently, the threats to our democratic foundation are not only from abroad, but from within our own country. Our laws are unambiguous, you can reject improper directives, you can decline illegal orders, you should refuse unlawful commands. No one has to follow commands that break the law or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Angry Response
The video message reportedly trigger a heated reaction from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he declared: "This is really concerning, and Dangerous to our United States. Their words cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Officials React
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Top Democrats released a combined declaration denouncing the comments.
"Violent politics has no role in America," they wrote. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all acted our United States with exceptional loyalty and honor. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous threats of violence against congressional representatives, and call on House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also stated that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to guarantee the protection of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these radical social media posts and recant his aggressive language before he causes harm," the announcement continued.
Representatives' Firm Reaction
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also published a statement.
"We are former service members and national security professionals who care for this United States and took an pledge to defend and support the national charter of the United States," they said. "That oath is permanent, and we plan to keep it. No intimidation, pressure, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred responsibility."
"The significant point is that the ex-president views it punishable by capital punishment for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they added. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their protection as they execute their oath to the constitution and obligation to follow only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "Every American must unite and condemn the president's demands for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a time for ethical certainty."
More Political Reactions
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's statements and published on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the former president is demanding the death of public representatives."
He continued: "This is an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, the entire nation – regardless of party – should censure this right away and without qualification."
The Conservative official supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have prominent officials of Congress advising military personnel to disobey orders, I think that is historic in US history."
The Conservative representative also reportedly told journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the crime of treason" but that "lawyers have to analyze the terminology and decide all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a administration briefing on that day, when questioned by a media member, "Would the president want to kill members of Congress?", the White House press secretary responded: "Absolutely not."
"Let's be clear about what the president is addressing," the spokesperson stated. "There are current representatives of the American legislature who worked together to arrange a digital communication to personnel of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers encouraging them to disobey the executive's lawful orders."
She said: "The purity of our defense system depends on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is violated, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in disorder, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are fundamentally supporting."
