England and Wales Placed in the Same Group for RWC 2027 Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by rugby icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a major early clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing recalls their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' surprise early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

The Irish and the Scots also share a pool together, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, they secured a convincing win, with their opponents unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, both impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked South Africa until the showpiece match, presuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

If the pools play out in line with the current world rankings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from the likes of the English and Ireland until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at jump-start the competition.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are grouped with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 round for the first time in the competition's history.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the other six group winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
