New research indicates that individuals who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using these treatments need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle support.
