Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Icon, Passes Away at 81 Years of Age
The world mourns the passing of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican-born musician and actor whose captivating vocal talent was instrumental in popularizing reggae music across the globe. The artist has died at the age of 81.
“With deep sorrow that I share that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” wrote his wife Latifa on social media. “I am grateful for his loved ones, friends, peers in the arts and coworkers who walked with him on his journey. To all his supporters globally, please know that your encouragement was his motivation during his entire professional life … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” The message was also signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.
Cliff was beloved for hits such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His optimistic musical style and uplifting spirit brought him a vast and loyal following.
Beyond his music accomplishments, Cliff starred in the 1972’s drama film The Harder They Come, a role that received critical praise and is considered a landmark of film in Jamaica.
Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of artists, including the legendary Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the prestigious Order of Merit from Jamaica.
