The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.

The finale of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for further series.

However, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
