The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.

Overall, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.

The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will love its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
