Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared earlier today that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. An investigation is under way.

Our starting point to check the location of where the images originated was based on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.

We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.

Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the footage were taken.

We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
